Thibaud IV, the Count-King

Though his father was already deceased when Thibaud IV was born in 1201, he did not reign over the Champagne region until he reached adulthood in 1222. Through his mother Blanche, Thibaud also became king of Navarre and was crowned in Pamplona in 1234. True to the tradition of his lineage that, for the past 4 generations, had led expeditions to the Holy Land, Thibaud IV set out on a crusade in 1239, driven by the ideal of chivalry and worried about his eternal salvation. Upon his return in 1241 and until his death in 1253 in Navarre, he resided on the lands of Champagne, watching over the governance of his estates.
